Makoto Konno is an ordinary 17 year-old teenager who one day gains the ability to “leap” backwards through time. She decides to use her powers for trivial purposes such as getting to school early, getting better grades on tests, singing in a karaoke rental for hours and preventing undesirable situations from happening, including an awkward love confession from her best friend. Makoto eventually realizes that changing the past, even the small things, has its consequences.

Recommended Anime: Paranoia Agent (妄想代理人, Mousou Dairinin)

A mysterious young boy riding on gold rollerblades, wearing a cap, and carrying a baseball bat is assaulting pedestrians in the streets of Tokyo. Later on this 13 episodes anime, created and directed by Satoshi Kon, we find out that all the victims have something in common: They are all in despair. The victims become the focus of the story. Each character has a secret life and a dark side.

The great animation, well developed characters and a large amount of themes, such as suicide and pedophilia, make Paranoia Agent a must see anime.

Recommended Anime: Moyashimon -Tales of Agriculture (もやしもん)

Moyashimon is an 11 episode comedy series that follows the life of Tadayasu Sawaki, a first-year college student at an agricultural university, who has the unique ability to see and interact with microorganisms and bacteria. At the end of every episode there is a segment called “Microbe Theater”, which the microbes themselves explain their roles on making sake or nattou, for example.

Can an anime about microbes be interesting? The answer is it can not only be interesting, but funny and cool. There is a second season called Moyashimon Returns. Unfortunately it is not as good as the first season, but it is still good. Moyashimon has also been adapted to a live action series(ドラ).

Playstation Controller’s Buttons

Have you even wondered what the symbols on Playstation controller mean? According to Teiyu Goto, Sony designer responsible for the controller, they were meant to express the meaning of their functions.

The triangle refers to viewpoint, it represent one's head or direction.
Square refers to a piece of paper, it represent menus or documents.
The circle (maru) represents “yes”.
The X (batsu) represents “no”.

Japanese Word of the Day #122

Anime Recommendation: Ergo Proxy (エルゴプラクシー)

The story begins in a futuristic domed city called Romdeau, built to protect its citizens after a global ecological disaster thousands of years prior. In this utopia, humans and androids called AutoReivs coexist peacefully under a total management system. Behind the scenes, the government has been conducting secret experiments on a mysterious humanoid life form called a "Proxy”, that is believed to hold the key to the survival of mankind.

Inspector Re-l Mayer (granddaughter of the Regent of Romdeau) of the Citizen Intelligence Bureau is in charge of investigating a series of brutal murders apparently committed by AutoReivs infected with the Cogito virus (which causes them to become self-aware). The journey starts when Re-l meets Vincent Law, an immigrant who works for Romdeau's AutoReiv Control Division, and Pino, an infected companion type AutoReiv.

There are lots of things that make this 23 episode series a great anime: The artwork, the plot, the music…But what stand out are the characters. The characters are three dimensional and believable. One example is the adorable Pino. Her insatiable curiosity, innocence, stubborn temperament and determination make her one of my favorite characters in this must see anime.
